Life of a Duke
Frederick was born in a place called Gondreville. His father was Theobald II, who was also the Duke of Lorraine before him. Frederick took over as Duke after his father passed away.
In 1314, a big meeting happened in Frankfurt, Germany. This meeting was for the "prince-electors" of the Holy Roman Empire. These were powerful leaders who chose the new emperor. They had to pick a new emperor after Henry VII died. Two main families wanted the job: the Habsburgs and the Wittelsbachs. Frederick supported Frederick the Handsome, who was from the Habsburg family. Frederick the Handsome was also his brother-in-law.
In 1322, Frederick and Frederick the Handsome were captured during a major fight called the Battle of Mühldorf. The King of France, Charles IV, saw this as a chance to make Lorraine closer to France. He helped Frederick get released. Frederick promised that Lorraine would not get involved in the Holy Roman Empire's politics.
In 1324, Frederick joined a military trip to Aquitaine. This was against the lands of Edward II of England. King Charles IV of France had built a fort on Edward's land, which caused problems. Frederick also took part in the War of Metz in 1325 and 1326. In 1328, he joined Philip VI of France when Philip became king. Frederick fought and died in the Battle of Cassel that same year.
Frederick's Family
In 1304, Frederick IV married Elisabeth of Austria. She was born in 1285 and passed away in 1352. Elisabeth was the daughter of Albert I, who was an Emperor.
Frederick and Elisabeth had several children:
- Rudolph (1320–1346), who became the next Duke of Lorraine after his father.
- Margaret, who married Jean de Chalon. After he died, she married Conrad, Count of Friburg. Later, she married Ulrich, Lord of Rappoltstein.
- Four other children who sadly died when they were very young.
