Theotonius Amal Ganguly (born February 18, 1920, died September 2, 1977) was an important Catholic priest and teacher. He became the second Archbishop of Dhaka. This made him a major leader in the Catholic Church in Bangladesh.
Early Life of Theotonius Amal Ganguly
Theotonius Amal Ganguly was born on February 18, 1920. His birthplace was Hashnabad, which is in the Dhaka area. He was the second of three children. His parents were Nicholas Komol and Romana Komola Ganguly.
Education and Learning
Ganguly finished his high school studies at Holy Cross High School in Bandura. After that, he moved to Ranchi. There, he attended St. Albert’s Seminary to continue his religious education.
On June 6, 1946, he became a priest. In 1947, he traveled to Indiana in the United States. He went there to study even more. He earned a Ph.D. degree from the University of Notre Dame in 1951.
His Career as a Leader
Ganguly began his career as a professor. He taught logic and English at Notre Dame College. In 1954, he was given the role of the college's director of studies. This meant he helped guide what students learned.
In 1958, he became the vice principal of the college. When the principal, James L. Martin, passed away in 1960, Ganguly took over. He then became the principal of Notre Dame College.
Later in 1960, Ganguly was made a bishop. He became the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of Dhaka. Five years later, he was appointed Coadjutor Archbishop of Dhaka. This meant he was helping the main archbishop. In November 1967, he became the Metropolitan Archbishop of Dhaka. This was a very important leadership position in the Catholic Church.
