Early Life and Learning

Therese Ritchie was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, in 1961. In 1980, she moved to the Northern Territory. She studied at the Northern Territory University, which is now Charles Darwin University (CDU). She earned a Diploma of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1985. Later, in 2001, Ritchie studied animation in Melbourne. She then completed her Masters in Visual Arts from CDU in 2005.

In 1990, Therese Ritchie co-founded Green Ant Research Arts and Publishing. She started this company with Chips Mackinolty and Peter Cook. Later, she also started her own business. It was a graphic design company called Black Dog Graphics.

Important Art Projects

From 2012 to 2014, Ritchie created a series of artworks. These works were made by many artists from the Top End region. They responded to comments made by a government official about Indigenous children. The art aimed to express strong feelings about these comments. In 2016, she worked with artists from the Borroloola region. This project was called Open Cut: Jacky Green, Sean Kerins, Therese Ritchie. It explored the complicated relationship between Aboriginal people and mining companies. These companies work on land important to Aboriginal communities.

In 2010, an exhibition called Not Dead Yet was shown at the CDU Art Gallery. This show featured her work alongside another famous artist, Chips Mackinolty.
