Early Life and Learning

Therese Ritchie was born in Newcastle, New South Wales, in 1961.

In 1980, she moved to the Northern Territory. There, she studied art at the Northern Territory University. This university is now called Charles Darwin University (CDU). She earned a Diploma of Arts and a Bachelor of Fine Arts in 1985.

Later, in 2001, Therese studied animation in Melbourne. She attended the Victorian College of the Arts for this.

She then went back to CDU and earned a Masters in Visual Arts in 2005.

Her Work and Businesses

In 1990, Therese Ritchie helped start a company called Green Ant Research Arts and Publishing. She founded this company with Chips Mackinolty and Peter Cook.

Later, she started her own business. It was a graphic design company called Black Dog Graphics. Graphic design is about creating visual things like logos and posters.

Important Art Projects

From 2012 to 2014, Therese Ritchie created a series of works called LittlePricks. These works included publications and art shows. Many artists from the Top End region contributed to this project.

The art was a response to comments made by a politician named Rob Knight. He was the Minister for Young Territorians at the time. His comments were about Indigenous children during Australia Day demonstrations. Therese Ritchie's art aimed to address these negative remarks.

In 2016, she worked with artists from the Borroloola region. This project was called Open Cut: Jacky Green, Sean Kerins, Therese Ritchie. It explored the complex connections between Aboriginal people and mining companies. These companies often work on land important to Aboriginal communities.
