Thessalon First Nation is a community of Ojibwe people. They are one of the many First Nations in Canada. This community is located in the Algoma District of Ontario. Their main home is the Thessalon 12 reserve. They are also part of the Anishinabek Nation, a larger group of Ojibwe communities.
About Thessalon First Nation
Thessalon First Nation is a self-governing community. They have their own chief and council. These leaders work to make decisions for their people. They also help manage the reserve land. The community is part of the Anishinabek Nation and the Mamaweswen, The North Shore Tribal Council. These groups help First Nations work together.
Their Land and History
The land where Thessalon First Nation lives has been their home for a very long time. This area is known as their traditional territory. It was used and recognized by the Anishinaabe people.
- In 1763, the Royal Proclamation of 1763 recognized their right to the land.
- The Treaty of Niagara in 1764 also confirmed this right.
- Later, in 1849, a report called the Vidal-Anderson Commission report recognized their land use.
- Finally, in 1850, their traditional territory was officially set aside. This happened through the Lake Huron Treaty.
