What is Thevenard?
Thevenard is an important place for shipping goods. It is a port town, which means it has a harbor where ships can load and unload cargo. It's located in the far west of the Eyre Peninsula in South Australia. The town is right next to Ceduna, a larger town.
A Busy Port
The port in Thevenard is very active. It handles large amounts of materials like grain, gypsum, salt, and zircon. These materials are loaded onto ships and sent to other places.
Moving Gypsum and Zircon

Thevenard is the end point for a special railway line. This railway brings gypsum from the Lake MacDonnell mine. The mine is about 65 kilometers (40 miles) to the west. Three trains full of gypsum arrive every day. About 3.5 million tonnes of gypsum are produced each year.
Another company, Iluka Resources, also uses the port. They export about 300,000 tonnes of zircon concentrate each year. Zircon is mined and processed at the Jacinth Ambrosia Mine. This mine is about 270 kilometers (168 miles) north-west of Thevenard. The zircon is brought to the port by road.
The Jetty
The jetty at Thevenard has two places for ships to dock. Each spot can handle ships up to 198 meters (650 feet) long. A special conveyor system loads materials onto the ships. It can load grain at 750 tonnes per hour. It can load gypsum even faster, at 950 tonnes per hour.
Local Government and Community
Thevenard is part of the District Council of Ceduna. This is the local government area that manages the town. For state government, Thevenard is in the electoral district of Flinders. For the national government, it is in the Division of Grey.
Many Greeks have moved to Thevenard over the years. They have especially contributed to the fishing industry. Greek immigrants from Thevenard are thought to have helped introduce eating barramundi fish to other Australians.
