Thierry Marx (born September 19, 1959) is a famous French chef. He is known for his special way of cooking called molecular gastronomy, which uses science to create amazing dishes.

About Thierry Marx

Thierry Marx grew up in Paris, France. His grandfather was a refugee who bravely fought during World War II.

When he was young, Thierry first thought about being a baker. But in 1978, he joined a special group called the Compagnons du Devoir. There, he learned to be a fantastic pastry chef, chocolatier, and even an ice cream maker.

Army Service

At 19, Thierry joined the army as a paratrooper in the marines. In 1980, he served as a peacekeeper during a conflict in Lebanon.

Returning to Cooking

After his time in the army, Thierry tried different jobs. He worked as a security guard and even moved money around. But he soon realized his true passion was cooking. He became a chef assistant at famous restaurants like Ledoyen, Taillevent, and Robuchon.

His talent was quickly noticed. He became the head chef at the Regency Hotel in Sydney, Australia. He also traveled a lot, cooking in places like Singapore, Hong Kong, and Tokyo.

Thierry Marx has earned many awards for his cooking.

Michelin Stars

  • In 1988, he received his first Michelin star for his restaurant Roc en Val in Tours, France.
  • From 1990 to 1995, he worked at Cheval Blanc in Nîmes, where he earned another star in 1991.
  • In 1996, he became the chef at Relais et Château Cordeillan-Bages in Pauillac. He earned his first star there in 1996 and a second one in 1999.

Chef of the Year

In 2000, a famous food guide called Gault Millau named him "Chef of the Year." He was also named "Cook of the Year" by Gault & Millau in 2006. In 2014, he was recognized as "chef of the year" by the Pudlo guide.

Television and New Projects

From 2010 to 2014, Thierry Marx was a judge on the French cooking TV show Top Chef on M6. This made him very well-known to many people.

In April 2010, he became the head chef at the Mandarin Oriental, Paris hotel. In June 2011, he opened two restaurants there: Sur-mesure by Thierry Marx and Le Camélia. He also opened a pastry shop. In 2012, Sur-mesure by Thierry Marx received two Michelin stars.

Thierry Marx is also very interested in combining cooking with science. In 2008, he started Foodlab, a special kitchen where scientists and chefs work together to experiment with new ideas.

As of 2019, he also runs the famous Jules Verne restaurant. This restaurant is located on the second floor of the amazing Eiffel Tower in Paris!
