Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Botfield (born 14 February 1762, died 17 January 1843) was an important English inventor and scientist. He was a metallurgist, meaning he studied metals, and a geologist, who studied rocks. Botfield lived in Shropshire, England, and was known for inventing a new way to make iron. His invention, patented in 1828, used hot air in blast furnaces. This idea was ahead of its time and helped shape how iron was made in the 1830s and 1840s.

Early Life and Family

Thomas Botfield was born in Dawley, Shropshire, in 1762. His father, also named Thomas Botfield, was a wealthy man. He earned his money from coal mines (collieries) and making iron. Thomas Botfield the younger went to school at Cleobury Mortimer.

As an adult, he worked as a manager at a coal mine. He got married in 1800. In 1812, he bought a large estate called Hopton Court in Hopton Wafers. He later helped pay for the rebuilding of the local church there in 1825. In 1818, he held an important local position as the High Sheriff of Shropshire.

Important Inventions

Thomas Botfield's most famous invention was a new way to make iron. He developed a method that used "gas flame or heated air" in the blast furnaces. This was a big step forward for iron production. His 1828 patent described many features that became common in blast furnaces later on. This made the process of smelting iron more efficient.

Scientific and Public Life

Thomas Botfield was a very active member of many important societies. He became a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS) on 18 April 1833. This is a very high honor for scientists in the United Kingdom.

He was also one of the first members of the Geological Society. He was a fellow of the Society of Arts and the Horticultural Society. He joined the Royal Institution and the Royal Geographical and Agricultural Societies. Botfield often attended meetings of the British Association. He rarely missed a meeting of any society he belonged to when he visited London.

Later Life and Death

In 1842, the year before he passed away, Thomas Botfield took on another important role. He was appointed treasurer of the Royal Salop Infirmary in Shrewsbury. This was a hospital that helped many people. Thomas Botfield died in January 1843 at the age of 80.
