Early Life and Business
Thomas C. Lanier built a successful business called Sipsey Mill. He joined the Bethesda Presbyterian Church in 1838 with his wife, Sarah D. Lanier.
Military Service in the Civil War
When the Civil War began, Lanier was chosen as a captain for a group called the Lane Guards. This group later became Company B of the 2nd Alabama Infantry. His regiment was formed in Pickens County on February 19, 1861. His company joined the state army on March 18, 1861.
The soldiers were then moved to the Confederate command at Fort Morgan on March 26. Lanier later became a Colonel of the 42nd Alabama regiment. He was hurt twice during the war and fought in many important battles.
Life After the War
After the war ended, Colonel Lanier wrote about his experiences. He said that his side "were whipped out and had to surrender." He also wrote that he wanted "peace now, henceforth and forever." He hoped to never be near another war again.
Lanier moved to Florida after the war. He started a town there called Lanier, Florida. In 1870, he was the Master of the Masonic Lodge in Leesburg, Florida.
