Thomas Donnelly Doubleday (February 18, 1816 – May 11, 1864) was an American bookstore owner. He also served as an officer in the Union Army during the American Civil War.

Thomas Doubleday: A Life Story
Thomas Doubleday was born on February 18, 1816, in Albany, New York. His father was Ulysses F. Doubleday, a U.S. Congressman. Thomas grew up in Auburn, New York. He had two younger brothers, Abner Doubleday and Ulysses Doubleday. Both of his brothers also fought in the American Civil War.
Bookstore Owner and Community Leader
People often called him T. D. Doubleday. He owned a popular book and stationery store on Wall Street in New York City. Thomas was also a leader in his community. He helped start two famous places: the Metropolitan Museum of Art and the American Museum of Natural History. These are big museums in New York City today.
Service in the Civil War
During the American Civil War, Thomas Doubleday became a colonel. He helped create and train the 4th New York Heavy Artillery Regiment. This group of soldiers from New York was sent to defend Washington D.C., the capital city, during the war. Colonel Doubleday left his military role in early 1863.
Family Life and Legacy
Thomas Doubleday and his wife, Mary Augusta Ward, lived on Staten Island. They had two children: Mary Augusta Sargent and Stephen Ward Doubleday. Their son, Stephen, was only 17 years old when he joined his father's regiment as a lieutenant. Stephen was injured while serving in the war.
Thomas D. Doubleday passed away on May 11, 1864, in New York City. His death was accidental; he was hit by a horse-drawn coach. He was buried on Staten Island, at St. Peter's Cemetery.
