Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Thomas Weaver (born 1773, died 2 July 1855) was a smart English scientist. He was a mining engineer, which means he knew a lot about finding and digging up valuable minerals from the ground. He was also a geologist, someone who studies the Earth's rocks, soil, and how they were formed.

Thomas Weaver's Life

Thomas Weaver loved learning about rocks and minerals. From 1790 to 1794, he studied these subjects with a famous teacher named Abraham Werner in a place called Freiberg.

When he came back to England, the government asked him to investigate gold. He looked for gold deposits in County Wicklow, Ireland. He became a very active member of the early Geological Society, a group for people who study geology. In 1826, he was chosen to be a Fellow of the Royal Society, which is a big honor for scientists.

Later, Thomas Weaver traveled to Mexico and the United States. He worked as a mining geologist in these countries, helping to find and understand mineral resources. He retired a few years before he passed away at his home in Pimlico on July 2, 1855.

Thomas Weaver's Discoveries and Writings

Thomas Weaver wrote many important papers about geology. He published articles in the Transactions of the Geological Society. These papers were about the geology of places like Gloucestershire and Somerset in England, and the south of Ireland.

In 1819, he published a book called Memoir on the Geological Relations of the East of Ireland. He also wrote for the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society. In 1825, he shared his ideas about the age of the fossil remains of the Irish Elk (Cervus megaceros). He believed these fossils were from a more recent time.

Starting in 1831, he began writing a series of papers about the carboniferous rocks found in America. These are rocks that often contain coal. Thomas Weaver wrote many geological papers between 1820 and 1841. Eight of these papers were specifically about Ireland.
