Thornburg is a small village located in Keokuk County, Iowa, in the United States. In 2020, 45 people lived there. The most important place in Thornburg is the Tri-County Community School. This public school serves students from kindergarten all the way through 12th grade.

History of Thornburg
How Thornburg Began
Thornburg was founded in 1879. A railroad company, the Burlington, Cedar Rapids and Northern Railway, built a train line through the area. This line connected Thornburg to a town called What Cheer.
Naming the Town
The town was named to honor Major Thomas T. Thornburgh. He was a soldier who died during an event known as the Meeker Massacre. By 1881, Thornburg became an important spot. It was where the train line to What Cheer met another line that went to Montezuma.
