Thorngate is a small suburb located just north of Adelaide's city center in South Australia. It's part of the City of Prospect, which is a local government area. Even though it's small, Thorngate is known as one of South Australia's most expensive places to live. Houses here can be quite valuable!

A Look Back at Thorngate's History

Thorngate used to be part of another suburb called Fitzroy. It's believed that Thorngate got its name from a person named John Batty Thorngate. He was the first person to be granted land in this area way back in 1840. John Batty Thorngate came all the way from Gosport, which is in Hampshire, England.

Where is Thorngate Located?

Thorngate is one of the smallest suburbs in Adelaide. It has clear boundaries:

  • To the north, it's bordered by Carter Street.
  • To the south, you'll find Fitzroy Terrace.
  • On the west side, it's next to Prospect Road.
  • And to the east, it's bounded by Main North Road.

Inside the suburb itself, there are only two other streets: Churcher Street and Thorngate Street.
