Exploring Medindie: A Special Place

Medindie is mostly a residential area, meaning it's full of homes where people live. Many of these homes are very impressive and some are even historic mansions.

Famous Historic Houses

Medindie is home to several important old houses. These buildings tell stories from the past.

"Willyama" Mansion

One of these mansions is "Willyama," located at 12 The Avenue. This house got its name, which is an Aboriginal word for Broken Hill, from Charles Rasp. He was a boundary rider who found a mining claim that later became the famous Broken Hill mining town. Charles Rasp bought "Willyama" in 1887.

"The Briars" Estate

Another historic home is "The Briars" at 15 Briar Avenue. It was built in 1856 for a person named George Charles Hawker. Today, "The Briars" is part of the McBride Hospital. You can also find many other beautiful houses along Robe Terrace.

Wilderness School: A Place to Learn

Medindie is also home to a well-known school.

History of Wilderness School

In 1884, two sisters named Brown started a school on Mann Terrace. The school moved a couple of times, first in 1885 and then to its current location at 30 Northcote Terrace in 1893. It was first called the Medindie School and Kindergarten. In 1918, it became known as the Wilderness School. Today, it is a private school just for girls.
