Thorstein Eiriksson facts for kids

Thorstein Eiriksson was the youngest son of the famous Viking explorer Erik the Red. Erik the Red was known for settling Greenland around the year 986. Thorstein had two older brothers, Leif and Thorvald.

Thorstein Eiriksson's Family and Adventures

Thorstein Eiriksson was part of a family of brave Norse explorers. His father, Erik the Red, led the first permanent European settlement in Greenland. Thorstein grew up in this new land, which was a challenging but exciting place.

Leif Erikson Discovers Vinland

Thorstein's brother, Leif Erikson, was a very famous explorer. Leif sailed west from Greenland and discovered a new land. He called this place Vinland, which many historians believe was in North America. This was a huge discovery for the Norse people.

Thorvald's Journey and Fate

After Leif's amazing journey, Thorstein's other brother, Thorvald, decided to explore Vinland himself. He led a second expedition to this new country. However, during their time there, they met the native people. The Norse called these natives Skraelings.

Sadly, the Skraelings attacked Thorvald and his men. Thorvald was badly wounded during the fight. He later died from his injuries and was buried in Vinland. After Thorvald's death, his crew sailed back to Greenland.

Thorstein's Attempt to Retrieve His Brother

Thorstein was very sad about his brother Thorvald's death. He decided to sail to Vinland to bring Thorvald's body back to Greenland. Thorstein set sail with his wife, Gudrid.

However, their journey was very difficult. The ship faced terrible weather and strong storms. They were unable to reach Vinland. After many weeks, they had to turn back. By the beginning of winter, they finally returned to Greenland. They landed at a place called Lysufiord in the Western Settlement. There, they found shelter with local families.

A Tragic Winter

That winter, a serious sickness spread through the settlement. Many people became ill, and sadly, several died. Thorstein Eiriksson was one of the people who passed away during this epidemic.

Thorstein Eiriksson's life was short, but he was part of an important period of Norse exploration. His family played a key role in the early European voyages to North America.
