Three Lake is a beautiful, small lake found high up in the mountains of Boise County, Idaho, United States. It's located in the famous Sawtooth Mountains, which are part of the amazing Sawtooth National Recreation Area. This lake is a special type called an alpine lake, meaning it's found at a very high elevation.

Exploring Three Lake's Location

Three Lake is nestled deep within the Sawtooth Wilderness. A wilderness area is a protected place where nature is kept wild and untouched. Because it's so wild, there are no official trails that lead directly to Three Lake or the area around Goat Creek. This means getting there can be quite an adventure for experienced hikers!

Getting a Wilderness Permit

To help protect the wilderness, visitors need a special wilderness permit. You can usually get one for free at a registration box. These boxes are found at the start of hiking trails or at the edges of the wilderness area. It's important to get a permit to help keep track of visitors and protect the environment.

Water Flow and Nearby Lakes

Three Lake is part of a system of lakes and streams. Water flows into Three Lake from a stream called Goat Creek. After filling Three Lake, Goat Creek continues to flow out of it, eventually joining the South Fork Payette River. Upstream from Three Lake, you'll find another lake called Limber Lake. Downstream, the water flows towards Oreamnus Lake.
