Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross facts for kids
The Three Peaks Cyclo-Cross is a super tough annual bike race in Yorkshire, England. It's a special kind of cycling called cyclo-cross, which mixes road cycling with off-road riding. Riders have to cycle and even carry their bikes over three big mountains: Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-ghent. The Bradford Racing Cycling Club organizes this exciting event every year on the last weekend of September.
What's the Race Like?
The race course has changed a few times over the years. When it first started, it was about 40 kilometres long. In 1980, it got longer, reaching 47 km. Then, in 1982 and 1983, it grew even more, first to 50 km and then to 57 km. The last change happened in 1994, making the course 61 km long.
Today, the race begins near Helwith Bridge, which is about 3 km south of Horton in Ribblesdale. From there, cyclists take on the challenge of Ingleborough, Whernside, and Pen-y-ghent. It's important to know that you can't cycle the whole course at other times of the year. This is because some parts of the race go through private land.
For most of its history, only special cyclo-cross bicycles with drop handlebars have been allowed. However, in the 1980s and early 1990s, mountain bikes were also permitted. It wasn't until 1979 that female riders started competing in the event. Also, there were no races in 2001 or 2007 because of foot and mouth disease in the area.
Awards and Prizes
There's a total of over £5,000 in prize money for the winners!
Riders who finish the race also get special certificates based on how fast they complete the course:
- Elite - If you finish in under 3 hours 30 minutes, you get an Elite certificate.
- 1st class - If you finish in under 4 hours, you get a 1st class certificate.
- 2nd class - If you finish in under 5 hours, you get a 2nd class certificate.
- Merit - All other riders who finish the race get a merit certificate.
