The Story of Thunderstruck
Brian's Basketball Dreams
Brian is a 16-year-old who lives in Oklahoma. He loves basketball and dreams of playing for his school team, the Eagles. But he has never made the team. Instead, he is the team's water boy. One day, Brian's sister records him getting hurt while practicing at home. She shows the video around school. Connor, the star player of the basketball team, even sees it.
Brian likes a new girl at school named Isabelle. But he feels very embarrassed when Connor shows his video to the whole school. To cheer him up, Brian's dad takes him to an Thunder game. They watch the Thunder play against the Detroit Pistons. The game is held at Chesapeake Energy Arena in Oklahoma City.
A Magical Shot and a Big Change
During halftime at the game, Brian is chosen to take a half-court shot. He misses the shot. Instead, the ball hits Rumble, the team's mascot. Later, Brian meets Kevin Durant. Brian tells Durant how much he wants to play basketball just like him. Durant signs a special edition Oklahoma City Thunder basketball for Brian.
As Durant hands the ball over, a strange burst of energy happens. Durant's incredible basketball talent magically transfers to Brian! After this, the Thunder lose the game. Durant shoots very poorly in the second half, missing all 13 of his shots.
New Skills and New Challenges
The next morning, Brian learns that Connor, who was at the game, recorded him missing the half-court shot. Connor posted the video online. Later that night, Brian goes to a carnival. He sees Connor trying to win a prize for Isabelle by shooting baskets. Connor fails to make the shots. Connor then challenges Brian to "do better." Brian easily makes the shots, winning a prize for Isabelle.
Meanwhile, Kevin Durant's performance in practices gets worse. He thinks he is just in a "slump." Brian, after making many amazing shots at home, decides to try out for the Eagles again. The coach is amazed by Brian's new skills. He makes Brian the team captain instead of Connor. With Brian's help, the Eagles start winning many games.
Finding a Way to Reverse the Magic
Durant's agent finds out about Brian. He realizes Brian is the same kid who missed the half-court shot. The agent thinks Brian somehow took Durant's talent. He arranges for Durant and Brian to practice together. They try many things to reverse the talent transfer, but nothing works.
Just before the final game, Brian and Isabelle argue. Isabelle feels that Brian has changed because of his new skills. Brian goes to apologize to her. While watching the video of him missing the half-court shot at Isabelle's house, Brian realizes what he needs to do. He figures out how to give Durant his talent back.
Brian rides his bike all the way to Chesapeake Arena. He finds Durant there. Brian explains that he hit Rumble the mascot right before the talent transfer happened. He believes hitting Rumble again, with the same ball, will reverse it. Brian hits Rumble with the exact same basketball. Then, he repeats the conversation he had with Durant at their first meeting. Suddenly, Durant gets his talent back! The Thunder team then qualifies for the playoffs.
The Final Game and a Bright Future
At the Eagles' final game, Brian is nervous because he no longer has Durant's amazing talent. He plays poorly at first. But with help from his teammates, including Connor, he still leads his team in a close game. Brian takes the final shot himself. He makes the game-winning shot! This sends the Eagles to the state playoffs for the first time in 32 years. Brian is later seen playing basketball with Durant. He is gradually getting better at the game on his own.
