Thurgood Marshall Academy is a special kind of high school in Washington, D.C., USA. It was the first school in D.C. to focus on law. The school was started to honor Justice Thurgood Marshall's ideas. He believed every student should get a great education. He also thought everyone should have the chance to be their best. The school is in the Anacostia neighborhood of Washington D.C.

School History

Thurgood Marshall Academy began because law students and teachers from Georgetown University Law Center saw a need. They were part of a program called DC Street Law.

Opening and Growth

The school first opened its doors in 2001. It started with 80 ninth-grade students in a rented church basement. Each year, the school added another grade level.

In 2005, Thurgood Marshall Academy moved into its own building. This building was renovated and expanded to fit the growing school. It is located in the Anacostia neighborhood.

New Facilities

In 2009, the school opened a new gymnasium. This gym is shared with the nearby A. Kiger Savoy Elementary School. This created a full campus to help meet the needs of young people in the area.

The school also started building an expanded garden. This garden is also shared with Savoy Elementary School. Thurgood Marshall Academy received full approval for its charter in 2007. It earned full accreditation in 2008.

Being Environmentally Friendly

Thurgood Marshall Academy works to be a "green" school. Science teachers and other staff help lead these efforts. The school tries to use less energy and be better for the environment.

Green Initiatives

The school has a "TMA Green Club" for students. They also have an organic garden where they grow vegetables. On the roof of the school, there are 15 solar panels. These panels help create clean energy for the school.

In 2011, the school won an award for its environmental work. It received the Mayor's Environmental Award for Excellence. This award recognized their efforts as an educational facility.

Awards and Recognition

Thurgood Marshall Academy has received several awards. These awards show its high quality and success.

High Performance Status

In 2011, the DC Public Charter School Board ranked schools. Thurgood Marshall Academy was one of only three charter high schools to get "Tier 1 status." This means it met high standards for performance.

National Recognition

The school has also been recognized by U.S. News & World Report. It was ranked as a "Bronze Medal School." This is a national honor for high schools.

In June 2010, CBS Evening News featured the school. This national news program highlighted the school's achievements.
