Thymus caespititius is a small, fragrant plant that grows close to the ground like a mat. It is originally found in places near the ocean, like parts of northwest Portugal and northwest Spain. It also grows on islands such as the Azores and Madeira.
This plant has thin, spoon-shaped leaves, about 6 millimeters (0.24 inches) long. They are smooth and have tiny hairs along their edges. Its pink, purple, or white flowers grow in small, flat clusters right on the plant. You can see these flowers from late spring to summer.
Growing Thymus caespititius
Thymus caespititius is often grown in gardens because it looks nice. It is a tough plant that can survive cold weather. Gardeners use a system called USDA Hardiness Zones to describe how cold a plant can handle. This plant can grow well in areas down to USDA Zone 7.
There is also a special type of this plant called Thymus caespititius 'Aureus'. This specific variety has thin, light gold leaves, making it a popular choice for gardens.
