The Tianshan cherry (scientific name: Prunus tianshanica) is a type of cherry plant. It grows naturally in the Tianshan Mountains of Central Asia. You can find it in places that are about 800 to 1000 meters (2,600 to 3,300 feet) above sea level.

About the Tianshan Cherry Plant

The Tianshan cherry is a type of shrub. It usually grows to be about 1 to 1.6 meters (3 to 5 feet) tall. Its bark starts out grey. As the plant gets older, the bark turns a brownish color.

Flowers and Fruit

This cherry plant has pretty pink flowers. Its fruits are small and dark red. Even though they are small, these fruits are very sweet. People find them quite tasty.

Natural Hybrids

Sometimes, the Tianshan cherry naturally mixes with another plant called Prunus cerasifera. When these two plants cross, they create new plants. These new plants can also produce fruit.

Scientific Name Changes

Scientists study how plants are related. They found that Cerasus tianshanica is actually the same as Prunus tianshanica. This means the Tianshan cherry is correctly called Prunus tianshanica.
