The Threeleaf Foamflower (Tiarella trifoliata) is a pretty plant. People also call it Laceflower or Sugar-scoop. It belongs to a group of plants called dicots. Its family name is Saxifragaceae.

This plant grows naturally in wet forests. You can find it in western North America. It lives in places from northern California all the way to Montana and western Canada. It likes areas that are not too high up.

About the Foamflower

The Threeleaf Foamflower is a perennial herb. This means it's a plant that lives for more than two years. It grows back each year, usually in the late spring.

Its flowers are small and white. They are shaped like tiny bells. These flowers grow on a tall, thin stem. This stem does not have leaves on it. The tiny parts of the flower, called calyx lobes, are about 1.5 to 2.5 millimeters long. The petals are a bit bigger, about 3 to 4 millimeters long.

The leaves at the bottom of the plant are quite big. They can be 15 to 80 millimeters long. They can also be up to 120 millimeters wide. These leaves often have three parts, like a clover. Sometimes they have 3 to 5 lobes, like a hand. Leaves that grow on the stem are much smaller. They are also not very common.

Different Types of Foamflower

There are three main varieties of Tiarella trifoliata. A variety is a group of plants within a species. They have small differences from each other.

  • T. trifoliata var. trifoliata: This type has leaves with uneven shapes. They also have rough, jagged edges, like small teeth.
  • T. trifoliata var. unifoliata: This variety has simple leaves. This means their leaves are not divided into smaller parts.
  • T. trifoliata var. laciniata: This type of foamflower has deeply cut leaves. You can only find it growing in Washington. It grows as far north as Vancouver Island in Canada.
