Tibirita is a small town and a municipality (like a county) in Colombia. It is located in the Cundinamarca department, which is like a state. Tibirita sits on a high plain called the Altiplano Cundiboyacense. It is about 125 kilometers (78 miles) away from Bogotá, the capital city of Colombia.

Tibirita shares its borders with several other towns. To the north is Villapinzón. To the east and south are towns in the Boyacá department, like La Capilla and Guateque. To the west, it borders Manta, Machetá, and Chocontá.

Discovering Tibirita's Past

Before the Spanish arrived in the 1530s, the area where Tibirita is now was home to the Muisca people. The Muisca were an important group of people in ancient Colombia. This village was once part of the lands ruled by the zaque of Hunza. A zaque was a powerful leader or chief of the Muisca people. Hunza is now known as Tunja, the capital of the Boyacá department.

Modern Tibirita was officially started on July 9, 1593. It was founded by a person named Miguel de Ibarra. The name "Tibirita" comes from the Chibcha language, which was spoken by the Muisca people.

What Tibirita Does for a Living

The main way people in Tibirita make money is through dairy farming. This means they raise cows to produce milk. This milk is then used to make dairy products like cheese and yogurt. It is a very important part of the local economy.
