Where Tiger Snakes Live
Tiger snakes usually live close to water sources. You can often find them near creeks, wetlands, swamps, or even in areas that flood. They are found across a wide part of Australia, from Western Australia all the way to South Australia. They also live on many coastal islands, like Tasmania and King Island. Because they like water, they are good swimmers and can even hunt in the water.
What Tiger Snakes Eat
Tiger snakes are carnivores, meaning they eat other animals. Their favorite foods are frogs and tadpoles. But they also have a varied diet that includes small rodents (like mice), bats, insects, lizards, fish, and birds. Sometimes, if food is scarce, they might even eat other snakes, including other tiger snakes! They are active hunters, using their excellent senses to find their prey.
Tiger Snake Venom and Safety
Tiger snakes are known for their strong venom. Their venom contains several dangerous substances. These include:
- Neurotoxins: These affect the nervous system, which controls things like breathing and muscle movement.
- Coagulants: These can make blood clot in a harmful way.
- Haemolysins: These can damage red blood cells.
- Myotoxins: These can cause muscle damage.
Because of these powerful components, a bite from a tiger snake can be very serious for humans. It's always important to be careful and keep a safe distance if you ever see a snake in the wild. If someone is bitten by any snake, it's crucial to get medical help right away.
