What's in a Name? The History of Tightwad

Tightwad was first known as Edgewood. This name came from the many woods near where the town started.

The village has a very unusual name, "Tightwad." People say the name came from a funny story. A store owner supposedly charged a postman an extra 50 cents for a better watermelon. Some stories say it was about a rooster instead of a watermelon! This event led to the village getting its unique name.

Tightwad started to grow a little in the mid-1980s. This was because it is close to Truman Reservoir, a large lake. In 2010, the village had a bank, a café, a tavern, and a convenience store. However, by April 2019, the bank had closed.

The Story of Tightwad Bank

The first Tightwad Bank opened in 1984. It started as a small branch of the Citizens Bank of Windsor. At first, it was in a portable trailer! Later, it moved into a brick building. The bank became famous because of its funny name. This fame helped it get over $2 million in deposits.

However, the big business growth expected from the nearby Truman Reservoir did not happen. The bank was robbed twice in the 1990s. In 2006, the bank's owner, UMB, decided to close the Tightwad branch.

But the story didn't end there! In 2008, Tightwad Bank reopened under new owners. It was now a branch of Reading State Bank from Reading, Kansas. To use the famous name, the Kansas location also changed its name to Tightwad Bank. One of the owners, Donald Higdon, said they were looking for "customers with a sense of humor." By 2010, the two Tightwad Bank locations had over $20 million in deposits. Sadly, by July 2018, the Tightwad Bank in Tightwad, Missouri, closed its doors again.
