San Francisco de Tilcara, often called Tilcara, is a city in the province of Jujuy, Argentina. It is the main town of the Tilcara Department. In 2010, about 6,249 people lived there. This area has been home to people for over 10,000 years. This makes it one of the oldest places in Argentina where people have lived without stopping.
Tilcara is about 84 kilometers (52 miles) from San Salvador de Jujuy, the capital city of the province. It sits next to National Route 9. The city is high up in the Andes mountains, about 2,500 meters (8,200 feet) above sea level.
The area around Tilcara is very beautiful with amazing mountains. It also has rich traditions from the original people who lived there. These things make Tilcara a popular place for tourists to visit in northwestern Argentina. Many visitors also enjoy hiking on the trails nearby.

Exploring Tilcara's Ancient Fortress
The most famous place to visit in Tilcara is the Pucará de Tilcara. This is an old fortress built by people who lived here before the Inca Empire. A pukara means "fortress" in the Quechua language.
