This new group became the famous band Queen.

Tim Staffell's Early Music Journey

Timothy John Staffell was born in Isleworth, England. He went to Hampton Grammar School. In 1964, he met Brian May at a concert. They formed a blues-rock band called '1984'. Other members were John Garnham, Dave Dilloway, John Sanger, and Richard Thompson.

In 1965, Staffell started studying art at Ealing Art College. There, he became friends with Freddie Mercury. His band '1984' opened for famous groups like Jimi Hendrix and Pink Floyd. Staffell left '1984' in 1968.

Soon after, Staffell and May started a new band called Smile. Roger Taylor joined them as the drummer. Staffell and May wrote a song together called "Doing All Right". The band Queen later included this song on their first album, Queen.

After Smile, Staffell joined a band called Humpy Bong. Then he joined an experimental progressive rock band named Morgan. With Morgan, he released two albums: Nova Solis and Brown Out.

Becoming a Model Maker and Designer

Tim Staffell later decided to work as a model maker and designer. He also became an animator and director for commercials. He worked on many interesting projects. One project was the BBC TV show The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy. He was also the main model maker for the first series of the children's TV show Thomas the Tank Engine & Friends.

Later, Staffell worked at Mountview Academy of Theatre Arts. This is a top drama school in the UK. He taught his design and model-making skills to students there. These students would become future designers and builders.

Returning to Music

In 2001, Staffell went back to the music industry. He formed a new blues and funk band called aMIGO with Richard Lightman. They got ideas from folk, Latin, and rock music.

In 2003, aMIGO released their first album. It had new versions of old Smile songs like "Earth" and "Doin' Alright". His former bandmate Brian May played guitar and sang on these songs. The album was first released as a limited CD-R. Later, it became available on iTunes.

In April 2018, Staffell recorded his part for "Doin' Alright" again. He recorded it with Brian May and Roger Taylor for the movie Bohemian Rhapsody. This movie tells the story of Queen. The song was called "Doing All Right ... Revisited" and was credited to Smile. The movie's music was released on October 19, 2018. The movie came out three days later. The soundtrack reached number 5 on the UK album charts.

Tim Staffell's second solo album, Two Late, came out on digital platforms on October 26, 2018. A physical release followed in November. In July 2019, the aMIGO album was re-released. It was a Remastered Special Edition CD. It included a live studio version of the song 'Just Couldn't Say'.

In late 2019 and early 2020, Staffell recorded an album called How High. He worked with Paul Stewart, who had been in the band 'The Others'. They called their band Staffell & Stewart. The album had new songs and classic rhythm and blues songs.

In September 2021, Staffell went to Barcelona to record his third solo album, Wayward Child. He recorded it at Room To Studios with his son Andrew. This album is planned for release in 2023. The first song from it, 'The Sinner', was released on February 24, Tim's 75th birthday.
