History of Timblin

How Timblin Began

Timblin started to form in the early 1800s. The first settlers arrived in Perry Township. These pioneers included James McClelland in 1803, Benjamin Ions in 1804, and David Hamilton in 1806. More families, like Elijah Ekis, Michael Lantz, and William Smith, came in 1815.

In 1843, William Smith and his sons moved to the land that would become Timblin. The town was later named after Andy Timblin. He was the town's postmaster in the mid-1880s. Andy's father, A. Timblin, built a log cabin around 1840 and started farming there.

Growth of the Town

Timblin truly began as a town around 1883. That's when John A. Timblin opened a store. A post office was set up in Timblin in 1889.

The town grew quickly after 1910. This was when the Pittsburg, Shawmut & Northern Railroad extended its tracks nearby. This made it easier for people and goods to travel.

In 1913, the Timblin Coal Company started its work. This brought jobs and more growth to the area.

Early Businesses and Government

The First National Bank of Timblin opened in October 1918. On its first day, people deposited nine thousand dollars!

In 1921, Joe Cosmano opened Cosmano's Restaurant. It sold soft drinks and sweets. A furniture store, Heller & Mateer, was founded in 1922 by Winn S. Heller and R. F. Mateer. Also in 1922, G. H. Maxwell opened a clothing store.

Timblin officially became a borough in 1923. A special election was held on January 30, 1923. Residents voted for their first local leaders. T. L. Miller was chosen as the borough's burgess, which is like a mayor. Other officials were elected to help run the town and its school.

Timblin is in the southwestern part of Jefferson County, Pennsylvania. It is located at coordinates 40°57′58″N 79°12′2″W / 40.96611°N 79.20056°W / 40.96611; -79.20056. The border of Armstrong County is just to the west of the borough.

Land and Water Features

The borough covers about 2.47 square kilometers (0.91 square miles). A very small part, about 0.28%, is water. Timblin is in a valley where Pine Run flows. Pine Run is a stream that flows west into Mahoning Creek. Mahoning Creek then flows into the Allegheny River. Two other streams, Eagle Run and Painter Run, join Pine Run from the north within Timblin.
