Tina Mabry, born on February 9, 1978, is an American film director and screenwriter. She grew up in Tupelo, Mississippi. After her first big movie, Mississippi Damned (released in 2009), she was recognized as one of the '25 New Faces of Indie Film' by Filmmaker magazine. She was also named a James Baldwin Fellow in Media by United States Artists.

Early Life and Education
Tina Mabry was born in Tupelo, Mississippi. When she was in college at the University of Mississippi, she watched two movies that really inspired her: Boys Don't Cry by Kimberly Peirce and Love & Basketball by Gina Prince-Bythewood. These films made her decide she wanted to work in movies.
After college, she moved to Los Angeles to follow her dream. She earned her Masters of Fine Arts degree in Cinema and Television from the University of Southern California.
Tina Mabry's Film Career
Mabry started her journey in filmmaking with a short movie called Brooklyn's Bridge to Jordan in 2005. This was an early step in her career as a director and writer.
Writing for the Big Screen
In 2007, Tina Mabry wrote a film called ... Committee. This movie was directed by Jamie Babbit. It was shown for the first time at the 57th Berlin International Film Festival, which is a very important film event.
Directing Her First Feature Film
Tina Mabry made her debut as a feature film director in 2009 with Mississippi Damned. She also wrote this movie. She has shared that the story for Mississippi Damned was inspired by parts of her own life.
She received a special grant from Kodak that helped her get the film stock needed to make the movie. Mississippi Damned was very successful at film festivals. It won top awards at the Chicago International Film Festival, Outfest, American Black Film Festival, and Urbanworld Film Festival. The movie first aired on Showtime in 2011. Today, you can watch it on Netflix, thanks to Ava DuVernay's company, ARRAY.
Working on TV Shows
Mabry has also written and directed two episodes for a TV series called FutureStates, which was produced by ITVS. One of these episodes, titled Ant, starred actor Guillermo Díaz.
In 2015, Tina Mabry joined the team for the OWN series Queen Sugar. This popular show was created by Ava DuVernay and Oprah Winfrey. Mabry worked on the show as a producer, writer, and director, helping to bring the stories to life.
