Tino la Bertram Best (born 26 August 1981) is a former West Indian cricket player. He is known for his fast bowling. Tino played for his home team, Barbados, starting in 2002. He also played for the English club Yorkshire in 2010.
Tino Best made his first Test match appearance in May 2003. A year later, he played his first One Day International (ODI). In 2004, a back injury kept him from playing for almost a year. He later joined the Indian Cricket League in 2008.
A special moment in his career happened on 10 June 2012. He set a new record for the highest score by a number 11 batsman in a Test match. He scored 95 runs against England. This record was later broken by Ashton Agar in 2013. Tino also shared a huge 143-run partnership with Denesh Ramdin in that same match. This was one of the biggest partnerships for the last wicket in Test cricket history.
Starting His Cricket Journey
Tino Best began his professional cricket career on 25 January 2002. He played his first first-class cricket match for Barbados against Guyana. In that game, he took four wickets for 50 runs. Barbados won the match by 162 runs. By the end of his first season, Tino had taken 17 wickets in 5 matches.
Joining the International Team
When Tino Best was called up for the Test series against Australia, he was the top wicket-taker for Barbados. This was during the 2002/03 season. He made his Test debut in May 2003. He opened the bowling for the West Indies team.
After his first Test, Tino was not chosen for some international tours. Other fast bowlers like Fidel Edwards and Jerome Taylor started playing more. However, Tino kept improving in domestic cricket. He took 49 wickets in one season, which earned him a spot back on the West Indies team in March 2004. This was for a series against England.
Tino took his first international wickets in his second Test match. His first dismissal was the batsman Graham Thorpe. England won the series, but Tino was the West Indies' best wicket-taker. He took 12 wickets in four matches.
In 2004, the West Indies toured England. Tino played in a match at Lord's. During this game, he got a back injury. This injury was more serious than first thought. He could not play cricket again until March 2005. In June 2005, he took four quick wickets against Pakistan.
Playing for Different Teams
Even though Tino Best played well for Barbados, he didn't play international cricket much after May 2006. In February 2008, he signed with the Indian Cricket League (ICL). He played Twenty20 cricket for Mumbai Champs in the ICL.
In July 2009, there was a disagreement between the West Indies players and the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB). Because of this, a less experienced team was chosen to play against Bangladesh. Tino Best was part of this team. He took two wickets in the series. The West Indies lost the series. All the players who played during this time, including Tino, were given special contracts by the WICB.
In April 2010, Tino signed a contract to play for Yorkshire County Cricket Club in England. He played well at first, and his contract was extended. However, his performance later dropped, and he was not chosen for the team as often. He took 18 wickets in nine matches for Yorkshire. In August 2010, his contract with the West Indies team was not renewed.
Tino played very well in the 2011/12 domestic season. He took 17 wickets. This led to him being called back to the international team in March 2012. He was chosen for the West Indies' ODI team to play Australia. Later, he joined the Test squad when the West Indies toured England.
In July 2014, Tino Best played for the Rest of the World team. This was in a special match at Lord's to celebrate 200 years of the ground.
