History of Tipp City
Tippecanoe City was started in 1840. It grew along the Miami and Erie Canal. This canal was like a water highway for boats. The city's name came from William Henry Harrison. He was a presidential candidate. His nickname was "Tippecanoe." This nickname came from his bravery at the Battle of Tippecanoe in 1811.
In its early days, Tippecanoe City was a popular stop. Boatmen traveling on the canal would often visit. You can still see parts of the old canal locks east of downtown. As the city grew, it joined with a nearby village called Hyattsville.
Later, in the 1850s and 1860s, railroads became popular. This made the canals less important. The city's fast growth slowed down. You can still see old repair shops from the early rail system.
In the 20th century, new roads helped the city grow again. These included U.S. Route 25 and Interstate 75.
Why the Name Changed
The city's name changed to Tipp City in the 1930s. The U.S. Postal Service made this change. It was to avoid confusion with another town named Tippecanoe in Ohio.
Some people in Tipp City want to change the name back. They think modern mail systems would prevent confusion. However, most residents are used to "Tipp City." The local high school is still called Tippecanoe High School. This reminds everyone of the city's original name.
