The Tiraumea River is a river found in the Manawatū-Whanganui region. This area is located on the North Island of New Zealand. It is sometimes called the "northern" Tiraumea River. This helps people tell it apart from another river with the same name in a different part of New Zealand.

About the Tiraumea River

The Tiraumea River is about 25 kilometers (15.5 miles) long. It starts high up in the hills and flows downhill. The river is an important part of the local environment.

Where the River Begins

The Tiraumea River starts in the hilly area of the Tararua District. This is just south of a small place called Tiraumea. The river's starting point is about 330 meters (1,083 feet) above sea level.

A smaller stream, called Tiraumea Stream, also feeds into the main river. This stream collects water from the southern end of the Puketoi Range of hills.

The River's Journey

From its source, the Tiraumea River flows first towards the west. Then, it turns and flows north. It travels until it reaches the larger Manawatu River.

The Tiraumea River joins the Manawatu River near some important bridges. These bridges carry State Highway 2 and a railway line. This meeting point is about 5 kilometers (3 miles) south of the town of Woodville. At this point, the river is about 77 meters (253 feet) above sea level.

Other Streams Joining the River

Several other streams and smaller rivers flow into the Tiraumea River along its path. These are called tributaries. Some of these include the Ihuraua River, the Mangaone River, and the Mangatainoka River. They all add water to the Tiraumea River as it flows.
