Tjörn Municipality (which in Swedish is Tjörns kommun) is a special area in Sweden that works like a local government. It covers the entire island of Tjörn and some smaller islands nearby. You can find it in western Sweden, in a region called Västra Götaland County. The main town and administrative center of the municipality is Skärhamn.
Tjörn is a pretty big island, actually the sixth largest in Sweden! It's part of a beautiful coastal area known as Bohuslän. Long ago, in 1952, all the smaller towns and villages on Tjörn and its nearby islets joined together to form the Tjörn Municipality we know today.
For many, many years, the people living here made their living from fishing and building boats. Even today, some of the biggest employers are companies involved in shipping, like TransAtlantic, and shipyards where boats are built and repaired, such as Djupviks varv and Rönnängs varv.
Exploring Tjörn's Geography
Tjörn is an island, but it's well-connected! To the east, a bridge called the Tjörn bridge links it to the town of Stenungsund on the mainland. If you head north, the Skåpesund bridge connects Tjörn to another island called Orust.
The main town, Skärhamn, is a busy place. But there are many other charming communities, especially fishing villages, scattered around the island. Some of these include Rönnäng, Klädesholmen, and Kyrkesund. There's also a nearby island called Mjörn to the north-east, which is famous for its large shell banks – piles of ancient shells!

Fun for Tourists
During the summer months, Tjörn becomes a very popular vacation spot! The number of people on the island can jump from around 10,000 to 20,000 or even 30,000 as visitors arrive. They come to enjoy activities like yachting (sailing in fancy boats) and swimming in the sea.
Skärhamn has a large guest harbour where many yachts can dock. It's a great stop for people exploring the beautiful Swedish west coast by boat. While in Skärhamn, you can also visit the Nordic Watercolour Museum (called Akvarellmuseet in Swedish), which is a famous art museum dedicated to watercolour painting.
