Toíta's History
How Toíta Became Part of the U.S.
Long ago, after a war called the Spanish–American War in 1898, Spain gave Puerto Rico to the United States. Puerto Rico then became a special kind of area connected to the U.S.
In 1899, the U.S. government counted all the people living in Puerto Rico. This count is called a census. They found that Toíta and a nearby area called Honduras had 800 people living there together.
