Tobergill is a lovely area in County Antrim, Northern Ireland. It covers about 1,044 acres, which is like a really big park! Tobergill is known as a "townland." A townland is a very old type of land division used in Ireland. It's a bit like a small neighborhood or rural area.

You can find Tobergill on the western side of Donegore hill. It's part of the civil parish of Donegore. It also belongs to an old historical area called the barony of Antrim Upper.

What's in a Name?

The name Tobergill comes from the Irish words "An Tobar Geal." This means "the bright or white well." It's cool how places get their names from things like a special well!

Over time, the name Tobergill has been written in different ways. For example, in 1608, it was called Tubbergeill. Later, in 1621, it was written as Turbergeile. By 1669, people were calling it Tubbergill.

Ancient Discoveries

Tobergill is a really interesting place for history buffs! Archaeologists have found some cool ancient structures here. These discoveries tell us about people who lived in this area a very long time ago.

The Stone Circle

Imagine finding a circle of huge stones! There is a stone circle in Tobergill. Today, only one very large stone is still standing tall. The other stones are scattered around, but you can still see where they once stood. Stone circles are often very old and were used for special ceremonies or burials.

Underground Chambers

In 1959 and 1960, something amazing was found by two farmers. They were ploughing a field when they uncovered a hidden underground passage! This passage was a "souterrain." Souterrains are underground tunnels or chambers built by people in ancient times.

This souterrain in Tobergill had three different rooms or chambers. Archaeologists studied it to learn more about how people lived back then. After they finished their research, the souterrain was filled in again. This was done to keep farm animals safe from falling into it.
