You might also spot the remains of an old steamship dock, which tells a story about the area's past.

The Name's Story

The name Tocoi comes from a word used by the Timucua people. The Timucua were Native Americans who lived in this area long ago. Their word Tocoi means "water lily". This suggests that water lilies were common in the creek when the Timucua lived there, from the 1500s until about 1800.

A Town That Disappeared

The southern side of Tocoi Creek was once home to a busy settlement called Tocoi. In the late 1800s, this area was an important place for travel and trade. However, over time, the town became less active and is now considered a ghost town. This means it's a place where people used to live and work, but now very few or no one lives there.

In 1872, a famous author named Harriet Beecher Stowe visited the area. She spent her winters in nearby Jacksonville. She described the landing at Tocoi Creek as "a shed and a sand-bank and a little shanty, where to those who require, refreshments are served." This shows how simple the area was back then.

A New School's Name

In December 2020, the school board of St. Johns County decided to name its newest high school after the creek. The school is called Tocoi Creek High School and it opened in 2021. This helps keep the history and name of Tocoi Creek alive for new generations.
