Todd Mitchell was born in Toledo, Ohio. He went to Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana. There, he played basketball for the Purdue Boilermakers. His coach was Gene Keady.
Todd and his teammate, Troy Lewis, helped the Boilermakers win two Big Ten Conference titles. These wins happened during Todd's junior and senior years. They also reached the "Sweet Sixteen" in the 1988 NCAA Men's Division I Basketball Tournament. This is a big achievement in college basketball. Todd was named "First Team All-Big Ten" in both his junior and senior years. This means he was one of the best players in the Big Ten Conference.
