Todd Washington, born on July 19, 1976, is a well-known American football coach and a former player. He used to play as a center in the National Football League (NFL). Most recently, he worked as an assistant coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Before joining the Jaguars, he coached for several other teams. These included the New York Jets, Orlando Apollos, Baltimore Ravens, and Hartford Colonials. He also coached at the University of San Diego.
As a player, Washington played college football at Virginia Tech. He was chosen by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the 1998 NFL draft. He played for eight seasons in the NFL with the Buccaneers and the Houston Texans.
Playing in the NFL
Todd Washington had a successful career playing football. He was known for his strong performance as a center and guard.
College Football at Virginia Tech
Todd Washington played for four seasons at Virginia Tech. He was a starter at center and also played as a guard. He helped his team, the Hokies, run for more than 200 yards per game in his last two seasons.
As a senior, he was the starting center. He earned first-team honors in the Big East. He also made 81 "knockdown blocks," which means he helped clear the way for his teammates. He was considered one of the top centers before the NFL Draft.
Playing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers picked Todd Washington in the fourth round of the 1998 NFL draft. He was the 104th player chosen overall.
Todd played for the Buccaneers for five seasons. He was part of the team that won Super Bowl XXXVII. This was a huge achievement for him and the team. He left the Buccaneers in February 2003.
Time with the Houston Texans
In 2003, Todd signed with the Houston Texans. He started 14 games in a row, which was the most in his career. He also played an important role on special teams.
After the Texans changed their head coach, Todd was released from the team in 2006.
Brief Period with the Cleveland Browns
On July 30, 2006, the Cleveland Browns signed Todd Washington to a one-year contract. However, because of ongoing injuries, he decided to retire from playing football. He was placed on the Browns' reserve/retired list on August 6, 2006, which ended his playing career.
Coaching Career
After his playing days, Todd Washington became a successful football coach. He has coached at both college and professional levels.
Coaching at the University of San Diego
Todd Washington started his coaching career in 2007. He became the offensive line coach at the University of San Diego. His offensive line helped the team score a lot of points. They averaged 44.3 points and 483.1 total yards per game.
In 2008, the offense continued to do well. They were first in their league for scoring and total offense. In 2009, he was promoted to offensive coordinator.
Coaching for the Hartford Colonials
In 2010, Washington became the offensive line coach for the Hartford Colonials. This team was part of the United Football League. In Hartford, he worked with coaches he knew from his playing days.
His offensive line helped the team rank first in total offense and rushing yards. After the 2010 season, four of his linemen signed contracts with NFL teams.
Winning a Super Bowl with the Baltimore Ravens
On February 4, 2011, Washington was hired by the Baltimore Ravens. He worked as an assistant offensive line coach.
Washington was part of the coaching staff when the Ravens won Super Bowl XLVII. This was a special win for him. It made him one of only 13 people to win a Super Bowl as both a player and a coach. He left the Ravens after the 2016 season.
Coaching the Orlando Apollos
In November 2018, Todd Washington joined the Orlando Apollos. He was hired by coach Steve Spurrier. Washington coached the running backs and special teams for the Apollos.
Working with the New York Jets
In January 2019, Washington was hired by the New York Jets. He worked as an offensive assistant under head coach Adam Gase.
Coaching for the Jacksonville Jaguars
On February 3, 2021, Washington was hired by the Jacksonville Jaguars. He became their assistant offensive line coach under head coach Urban Meyer.
He was kept on the coaching staff when Doug Pederson became the new head coach on February 17, 2022. Washington left the Jaguars on January 9, 2024.
Personal Life
Todd Washington is married to Shannon Elizabeth Keller. They have three children together: Cameron, Ava, and Zane. His daughter, Ava, plays Division I lacrosse at the University of Pittsburgh.
Washington earned a degree in physical education and health from Virginia Tech.
