Tokachi Province (十勝国, Tokachi-no kuni) was an old area in Japan. It was located on the large northern island of Hokkaidō. This province existed for a short time, from 1869 to 1882.

Today, the borders of Tokachi Province are very similar to an area called Tokachi Subprefecture. This subprefecture is still on Hokkaido.

History of Tokachi Province

How Tokachi Province Began

After the year 1869, the big northern island of Japan became known as Hokkaido. New smaller areas, called subdivisions, were created across the island. Tokachi Province was one of these new areas. It was officially formed in 1869.

Changes in the Meiji Period

During the Meiji period (1868-1912), Japan went through many big changes. The old provinces of Japan, like Tokachi, were changed into new areas called prefectures. Maps of Japan, including Tokachi Province, were updated during the 1870s to show these changes.

When Tokachi Province Ended

In 1882, Tokachi Province and ten other provinces on Hokkaido were reorganized. They were combined into three larger prefectures: Hakodate Prefecture, Sapporo Prefecture, and Nemuro Prefecture. This marked the end of Tokachi Province as a separate area.
