Tommie Robinson (born April 4, 1963) is a well-known American football coach. He currently works as the running backs coach for the UTSA Roadrunners team.

Playing Career Highlights

Tommie Robinson was a talented football player before he became a coach. He played as a Strong Safety for the Troy Trojans for three years, starting in every game. In 1984, he was part of the Troy team that won the Division II national championship. This was a big achievement for him as a player.

Coaching Journey

Tommie Robinson has had a long and successful career coaching football. He has worked with many different teams, from high school to professional levels.

Early Coaching Days

Robinson started his coaching journey at the high school level.

  • From 1986 to 1987, he was an assistant coach at Woodham High School in Pensacola, Florida.
  • After that, he returned to his own former high school, Central High School in Phenix City, Alabama. He coached there as an assistant for three years, from 1988 to 1990.

Coaching in College and the NFL

Robinson moved on to coach at the college level and even in the NFL.

  • In 1991, he became a graduate assistant for the Arkansas Razorbacks.
  • He then coached running backs for the Utah State Aggies in 1992 and 1993.
  • From 1994 to 1997, he coached wide receivers for Texas Christian University.

NFL Experience

Robinson first joined the NFL in 1998.

  • He worked for the Dallas Cowboys from 1998 to 2000. He coached wide receivers and helped with special teams.
  • He later returned to the NFL with the Arizona Cardinals from 2010 to 2012, again coaching running backs.

Return to College Coaching

After his first NFL stint, Robinson coached at several major colleges.

  • In 2001, he was the running backs coach for the Oklahoma State Cowboys.
  • He spent four years at Georgia Tech. He coached wide receivers in 2002 and then running backs from 2003 to 2005.
  • In 2006, he coached running backs for the Memphis Tigers.
  • From 2007 to 2009, he coached running backs for the Miami Hurricanes.

Recent Coaching Roles

Robinson continued to coach at top college programs.

  • In 2013, he was the pass game coordinator and running backs coach for the USC Trojans.
  • He coached running backs for the Texas Longhorns from 2014 to 2015.
  • In 2016, he returned to USC as the run game coordinator and running backs coach.
  • From 2017 to 2019, he was an assistant head coach and running backs coach for the LSU Tigers. He was part of the team that won the national championship in 2019.
  • From 2020 to 2022, he coached running backs for Texas A&M.
  • In 2024, he worked as the Director of Quality Control for Colorado.
  • Since 2025, he has been the running backs coach for the UTSA Roadrunners.

Personal Life

Tommie Robinson is married to Lartonyar. They have three children together.
