Tommy Tutone is an American power pop band. They are best known for their 1981 hit song "867-5309/Jenny". This song became very popular, reaching number 4 on the Billboard Hot 100 music chart. Even though many people think they only had one big hit, they also had another song, "Angel Say No," that reached the Top 40 charts the year before.
Band History
The band Tommy Tutone was started in 1978 by Tommy Heath and Jim Keller. They were joined by bassist Terry Nails. Tommy Heath was the main singer and played rhythm guitar. Sometimes he also played keyboards. Jim Keller played lead guitar, and Terry Nails played bass and sang backup.
Tommy Heath and Jim Keller were the main members who stayed with the band for a long time. Other members, like bass players and drummers, changed often. Jon Lyons played bass on "867-5309" but was later replaced by others, including Jimmy James. Mona Gnader, who plays bass for Sammy Hagar's band, also played with Tommy Tutone.
The first drummer was Kenny Johnson. He was later replaced by Mickey Shine and then Victor Carberry. John Cowsill from the band The Cowsills played drums and sang on "867-5309/Jenny."
From 2001 to 2010, the band included Tommy Heath, Jimmy James, Greg Georgeson (on guitar), and Andy Gauthier (on drums). By 2012, Tommy Heath had also become a computer analyst and software engineer. He moved to Portland, Oregon. In 2007, the band signed a music deal with Spectra Records.
In 2017, Steve Fister joined the band on guitar. Jimmy James then switched to playing drums. That same year, the band released a new song called "My Little Red Book."
Jim Keller, one of the band's founders, later became the director of a music publishing company. He still performs music in New York City.
In 2019, Tommy Tutone released a new studio album called Beautiful Ending. This was their first album since 1998.
