Tonara is a small town, also called a comune (municipality), located on the beautiful island of Sardinia in Italy. It's part of the Province of Nuoro. Tonara is about 90 kilometers (56 miles) north of Cagliari and 35 kilometers (22 miles) southwest of Nuoro.
As of December 31, 2004, Tonara had a population of 2,116 people. The town covers an area of about 52.1 square kilometers (20.1 square miles).
Tonara is made up of several smaller villages and hamlets, known as frazioni. These include Arasulè, Su Pranu, Toneri, Teliseri, and Ilalà (which is now abandoned).
The towns that border Tonara are Austis, Belvì, Desulo, Sorgono, and Tiana.
