Anton Turek (born January 18, 1919 – died May 11, 1984) was a famous German football player. He was known as Toni and played as a goalkeeper. This means he was the player who protected the goal from the other team's shots.

Toni's Football Journey
Toni Turek was born in a city called Duisburg, Germany. He started his football journey playing for a local team, Duisburger Sportverein. Soon after, he joined another team, TuS Duisburg 48/99.
Becoming a Noticed Goalkeeper
A very important coach, Sepp Herberger, first noticed Toni when he was just 17 years old. This was on September 27, 1936. Toni was playing in goal for TuS Duisburg 48/99's youth team. Coach Herberger would later become the coach of the West Germany national team.
Playing During World War II
During World War II, Toni Turek was a soldier. He was very lucky during this time. Once, a piece of a shell hit his helmet, but he was not seriously hurt.
Joining Fortuna Düsseldorf
In 1950, Toni joined the football club Fortuna Düsseldorf. He played many games for them. From 1950 to 1954, he also played 20 games for the West Germany national team.
The 1954 World Cup Win
Toni Turek was the goalkeeper for West Germany in the 1954 FIFA World Cup final. This famous game was against Hungary. West Germany won the championship in what is known as "The Miracle of Bern". It was a huge surprise victory for the German team.
During the final game, Toni made an amazing save from a very powerful shot by a Hungarian player named Nándor Hidegkuti. A sports reporter named Herbert Zimmermann was so excited that he said, "Toni, you're a football God!" Later, the reporter had to say sorry for his words because some people thought comparing a football player to God was not right.
Toni's Later Life and Passing
Toni Turek passed away in Neuss, Germany, in 1984. For many years before he died, since August 1973, he had been paralyzed from the waist down. This meant he could not move his legs.
