The first host of The Tonight Show was Steve Allen. He hosted from 1954 to 1957. After him, Jack Paar took over in 1957. Sometimes, Ernie Kovacs would host the show on certain nights.

The Tonight Show has had many famous hosts over the years. Each host brought their own unique style to the show.
Johnny Carson's Era
In 1962, a very famous host named Johnny Carson took over. He hosted the show for 30 years, until 1992! This made him the longest-serving host. His announcer was Ed McMahon, and Doc Severinsen led the band. They were a very well-known team. Carson, McMahon, and Severinsen all retired from the show in 1992.
Jay Leno and Conan O'Brien
After Johnny Carson, Jay Leno became the host in 1992. He was very popular and hosted for many years. In 2009, Leno left the show, and Conan O'Brien took over. Conan O'Brien was known for his show Late Night and for being on Saturday Night Live. He hosted The Tonight Show from June 2009 to January 2010. He left because of some disagreements about the show's time slot.
Jay Leno then returned as the host on March 1, 2010. He hosted the show again until 2014.
Jimmy Fallon Takes Over
In 2014, Jay Leno retired from The Tonight Show for good. The current host is Jimmy Fallon. He is known for his fun games and musical segments with celebrity guests.
