Tonino Delli Colli (born November 20, 1923 – died August 16, 2005) was a famous Italian cinematographer. A cinematographer is the person in charge of how a movie looks. They decide on the lighting, camera angles, and how the scenes are filmed.
Who Was Tonino Delli Colli?
Tonino Delli Colli was born in Rome, Italy. He started working at Rome's famous Cinecittà film studio in 1938 when he was just 16 years old. By the mid-1940s, he was already working as a cinematographer.
In 1952, he filmed Totò a colori, which was the very first Italian movie made in color!
Working with Famous Directors
Tonino Delli Colli worked with many amazing and different movie directors. Some of these included:
- Sergio Leone, on classic Westerns like The Good, the Bad and the Ugly and Once Upon a Time in the West. He also worked on the crime drama Once Upon a Time in America.
- Roman Polanski, for films such as Death and the Maiden.
- Louis Malle, for the movie Lacombe, Lucien.
- Jean-Jacques Annaud, on The Name of the Rose.
- Federico Fellini, who was a very famous Italian director. Tonino filmed Fellini's last three movies.
He also worked very closely with director Pier Paolo Pasolini. They made 12 movies together! These included Pasolini's first film, Accattone (1961), Mamma Roma (1962), and The Gospel According to St. Matthew (1964).
One of his most important works was for the movie Seven Beauties, directed by Lina Wertmüller.
Later Career and Awards
Tonino Delli Colli's last movie was Roberto Benigni's Life Is Beautiful in 1997. This film won many awards, and Tonino himself won his fourth David di Donatello for Best Cinematography for his work on it. The David di Donatello is one of the most important film awards in Italy.
In 2005, he received the International Achievement Award from the American Society of Cinematographers. This award recognized his amazing work in filmmaking around the world.
Tonino Delli Colli passed away at his home in Rome in August 2005, at the age of 81, due to a heart attack. After he passed away, he was given the Lifetime Achievement Award at the 13th annual Camerimage Film Festival in Poland. This award celebrated his long and successful career in cinema.
