Anthony John Benneworth (born 12 December 1950 – died 10 March 2018) was an Australian cricketer. He also became a politician. He played cricket for the state of Tasmania from 1971 to 1979.
Tony Benneworth was a right-handed batsman. He was also a right-arm medium-pace bowler. This means he could both hit the ball and bowl it quickly.
Tony Benneworth's Cricket Career
Tony Benneworth was an important player for Tasmania. He was part of Tasmania's first ever team in the Sheffield Shield competition. This is a major first-class cricket tournament in Australia. He played in the 1977–78 season.
He made history for Tasmania in February 1978. He was the first player from Tasmania to take five wickets in one innings during a Sheffield Shield match. Taking five wickets is a big achievement for a bowler. In that game against South Australia, he took 5 for 115. He also scored 54 and 42 runs with his batting.
Life in Politics
After his cricket career, Tony Benneworth entered politics. He was a member of the Liberal Party. From 1992 to 1998, he served in the Tasmanian House of Assembly. This is like the state parliament for Tasmania.
In 2001, he ran for a seat in the Australian federal election. He was a candidate for the area called Bass. However, he did not win the election.
Later Life and Passing
Tony Benneworth passed away on 10 March 2018. He died in a boating accident. This happened off the coast of Ansons Bay, Tasmania.
