Ansons Bay is a small coastal area in the north-east of Tasmania, Australia. It's a quiet place, about 43 kilometers (27 miles) north of the town of St Helens. In 2021, only 62 people lived there.

Ansons Bay is both a natural bay and a tiny village. It's known for its sandy areas that appear and disappear with the tides. Long ago, the main job here was cutting down trees for timber. Today, people mostly work in fishing and tourism. The postcode for Ansons Bay changed in 2009 because mail now comes from Gladstone instead of St Helens.

History of Ansons Bay

Ansons Bay officially became a recognized place in 1968. There are a few ideas about how it got its name. Some people think it was named after William J. Anson, who was an early surgeon in Tasmania. Others believe it was named after Admiral George Anson, a famous British naval officer. Another idea is that a surveyor named Charles Gould named it after an early settler in the area.

A small, private post office called Ansons Bay Receiving House opened here on December 15, 1913. It closed just a few years later, around 1917.

Geography of Ansons Bay

Ansons Bay is located right on the coast. To the east, you'll find the beautiful waters of the Bay of Fires, which is part of the big Tasman Sea. The bay itself is almost completely surrounded by land. It connects to the ocean through a narrow channel, like a small river joining a big sea.
