Tony Gilbert (born October 16, 1979) is an American football coach. He used to be a professional linebacker player. Tony played college football for the University of Georgia. The Arizona Cardinals picked him in the 2003 NFL draft. He also played for the Jacksonville Jaguars and the Atlanta Falcons.
Tony Gilbert's Playing Career
Tony Gilbert had a successful career playing football. He played in college and then in the National Football League (NFL).
College Football Years
Tony played for the University of Georgia (UGA). In his final year, he was a middle linebacker and started every game. He was named to the All-Southeastern Conference second-team.
He made 114 tackles, which was a career high for him. He also had 2.5 sacks and caused one fumble. Tony was a member of the Zeta Nu chapter of the Phi Beta Sigma fraternity at the University of Georgia.
Playing in the NFL
Tony Gilbert played for a few teams in the National Football League.
Arizona Cardinals Team
The Arizona Cardinals chose Tony in the 2003 NFL draft. This was a big step for him into professional football. His two sons, Jacobi and Amir, were born in the same year.
Jacksonville Jaguars (First Time)
Later in 2003, the Jacksonville Jaguars signed Tony. He played with the Jaguars for five seasons. He was released from the team in August 2008.
Atlanta Falcons Team
Just two days after leaving the Jaguars, Tony joined the Atlanta Falcons in September 2008. This move brought him back with coach Mike Smith. Mike Smith had been the defensive coordinator for the Jaguars when Tony played there.
Tony was placed on Injured Reserve in December due to a hamstring injury. He was re-signed by the Falcons in February 2009.
Jacksonville Jaguars (Second Time)
In August 2010, the Jaguars signed Tony Gilbert again. However, he was released by the team in September 2010.

After his playing career, Tony Gilbert became a football coach. He has coached at several colleges and for the Jacksonville Jaguars.
Coaching at Georgia
Tony started his coaching career at his old college, the University of Georgia. In 2011, he worked as an assistant strength and conditioning coach.
Coaching at Auburn
In 2012, Tony moved to Auburn University. He was a graduate assistant for the defense and helped coach the linebackers.
Coaching at Georgia Military College
Tony was hired by Georgia Military College in 2013. He coached the defensive backs and linebackers there.
Coaching at John Milledge Academy
In 2014, Tony joined John Milledge Academy. He was the defensive coordinator and coached the linebackers for the team.
Coaching at North Carolina
Tony became a defensive quality control specialist at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2015. He also helped coach the linebackers.
Coaching at UCF
In 2018, Tony was hired by the University of Central Florida (UCF). He worked as a defensive quality control coach.
Coaching for the Jacksonville Jaguars
Tony Gilbert returned to the Jacksonville Jaguars in June 2020. He was hired as an assistant linebackers coach under head coach Doug Marrone.
He continued coaching for the Jaguars under new head coach Urban Meyer in February 2021. In February 2022, he was kept on staff by new head coach Doug Pederson. He served as the inside linebackers coach for the Jaguars until 2023.
