Anthony Leon Wroten Jr. (born April 13, 1993) is an American professional basketball player. He played college basketball for the Washington Huskies. While there, he was chosen for the first-team all-conference in the Pac-12. Later, the Memphis Grizzlies picked him as the 25th player in the 2012 NBA draft.

High School Basketball Journey

Starting Strong in High School

When Tony Wroten was a freshman at Garfield High School, he was already a star. He scored about 20.8 points per game. He also grabbed 8.7 rebounds and made 3.8 assists per game. He was named to the 2009 All-Washington State Class 4A first team. This was a big deal because he was the first freshman ever to get this honor.

Sophomore Season and Injury

In his second year, Tony continued to play well. He averaged 17.6 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 4.9 assists per game. Sadly, he had to miss his junior year. This was because he hurt his ACL during a football game.

Senior Year Comeback

Tony came back strong for his senior season. He averaged 25.0 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 4.1 assists per game. His amazing play earned him an invitation to the 2011 Jordan Brand Classic game. Experts like Rivals.com thought he was a top player. They listed him as the No. 3 point guard and the No. 14 player in the whole nation in 2011.

College Basketball Experience

Playing for Washington Huskies

Tony Wroten played college basketball for the Washington Huskies. In his first year, he averaged 16.7 points per game. He also had 5.0 rebounds and 3.6 assists per game. His great performance earned him the title of Pac-12 Freshman of the Year. He was also named to the All-Pac-12 first team. He was the first freshman from Washington to ever make the All-Pac-12 Team.

Moving to the NBA

On April 3, 2012, Tony decided to enter the 2012 NBA draft. His teammate Terrence Ross also joined him in entering the draft.

Professional Basketball Career

Memphis Grizzlies (2012–2013)

The Memphis Grizzlies picked Tony Wroten as the 25th player in the 2012 NBA draft. During his first year, he also played for the Reno Bighorns. The Bighorns are part of the NBA Development League, which helps players get more experience.

Philadelphia 76ers (2013–2015)

On August 22, 2013, Tony was traded to the Philadelphia 76ers. This was in exchange for a future draft pick. On November 13, 2013, he had his first game as a starter. He achieved a "triple-double" with 18 points, 10 rebounds, and 11 assists. This happened in an overtime win against the Houston Rockets. It was the first time in NBA history a player got a triple-double in their very first start! On March 8, 2014, Tony scored a career-high 30 points in a game against the Utah Jazz.

On November 7, 2014, Tony scored even more points, reaching a new career-high of 31 points. This was in a game against the Chicago Bulls. Unfortunately, on January 23, 2015, he had to stop playing for the rest of the season. He needed surgery on his right knee. Before his injury, he was having his best season. He was averaging 16.9 points, 5.2 assists, and 1.6 steals per game.

Tony worked hard to recover from his injury. On November 11, 2015, he was sent to the Delaware 87ers. This was to help him practice and get back into shape. He returned to the 76ers on December 4. On December 5, he played his first game for the 76ers since his injury. He scored four points in 13 minutes against the Denver Nuggets. On December 24, 2015, the 76ers decided to release Tony.

Texas Legends (2016–2017)

On March 16, 2016, Tony signed with the New York Knicks. However, he was released on June 22, 2016, without playing any games for them. He was briefly claimed by the Memphis Grizzlies again but was later released. On December 1, 2016, Tony joined the Texas Legends. He played his first game for them that night. He scored 11 points in a win against the Greensboro Swarm. He was later released by the Legends on January 28, 2017.

Rio Grande Valley Vipers (2017–2018)

On October 21, 2017, the Rio Grande Valley Vipers picked Tony in the 2017 NBA G League draft. He played for them until March 21, 2018, when he was released.

Playing Overseas (2018–2022, 2024)

Tony Wroten has played for several teams outside the United States:

  • Kalev/Cramo (2018–2019): He signed with this Estonian club on December 28, 2018.
  • Anwil Włocławek (2019–2020): On August 11, 2019, he joined this Polish team.
  • Joventut Badalona (2020): He signed with this Spanish team on January 30, 2020. He averaged 11.2 points per game there. He left the team on April 29.
  • Zamalek SC (2022): On January 16, 2022, Tony signed with this Egyptian team.
  • Iraklis (2022): On February 8, 2022, he joined this Greek team. He played in only 3 games due to injuries.
  • Urupan de Pando (2024): Tony started the 2024–25 season with this team in Uruguay.

Tony Wroten's Family Life

Tony Wroten comes from a family of athletes! His father, Tony Sr., played football for the University of Washington. He also played for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. Tony's mother, Shirley, was a track star at Washington and Arizona State University. She is still one of the top ten fastest runners for Washington in several races. Tony's aunt, Joyce Walker, was an amazing basketball player. She was a two-time All-American at Louisiana State University. She was also one of the first women to ever play for the famous Harlem Globetrotters. Tony is also related to former New York Knicks point guard Nate Robinson.
