About Too Phat's Music Journey
In the late 1990s, Joe Flizzow, Malique, and Kevin Felix (also known as Doctah'K) first formed a trio. Later, they became a duo under the Positive Tone music label. Their big break came in 1999. Their first songs, Li'l Fingaz and Too Phat Baby, were played a lot on local radio stations.
Because their first songs were so popular, they started working on their first album. It was called whuttadilly?. Another one of their albums, Plan B, sold over 4,500,000 copies. This earned them "double platinum" status in Malaysia. This means it sold a huge number of copies!
The music video for "Just a Friend" from the Plan B album was made with Maxis Hotlink. It first showed on the Malaysian TV channel NTV7. The video featured other local artists like M. Nasir, Fauziah Latiff, and Ferhad. It also included Malaysian athlete Watson Nyambek. Most of the video was filmed in Kuala Lumpur. Too Phat even worked with the American hip hop artist Warren G.
In 2005, Too Phat released their fourth and final studio album. It was called Rebirth into Reality. This album featured many hip-hop artists from East Asia. The first song from the album, Dua Dunia, featured the famous Malaysian singer Siti Nurhaliza. After this, the duo took a break. Malique and Joe Flizzow then started their own solo music careers.
In 2010, Too Phat got back together for a short time. They promoted their new song, "Masih Hip Hop".
Solo Adventures
After their last public show for Kanye West in 2007, both Joe Flizzow and Malique started their own solo music paths.
Malique's Solo Work
Malique released his solo album OK in 2008. He also released K.O The Mixtape in 2009. This was a team-up with DJ Fuzz. His album TKO: Pejamkan Mata was released under his own music company, Qarma Musiq. There were talks that Malique might release a new English album in 2017, but no news has come out about it since.
Malique has become more private since his Too Phat days. He prefers to keep his personal life out of the public eye. Even though he has released many popular songs with other artists, he usually does not appear in shows or interviews. He once said that he feels more comfortable selling his music without public appearances. He does not plan to change this.
Joe Flizzow's Solo Work
Joe Flizzow released his first solo album, President, on 31 December 2008. It was distributed by Warner Music Malaysia. His next album, Havoc, came out on 7 November 2013.
"Apa Khabar" Song
In 2015, Joe Flizzow's song Apa Khabar (featuring SonaOne) won the top prize at the Anugerah Juara Lagu Award (AJL). The song's lyrics were about Joe remembering his good times with Malique. He was saying hello to him through the song. This win was a big surprise for some people. But, many long-time fans of Too Phat loved the song. They praised Joe for bringing back their happy memories of the duo.
What They're Doing Now
Since 2016, Joe Flizzow has mostly focused on Kartel Records. This is a record label he started in 2005. Many local hip-hop and R&B artists have signed with his label. Some well-known names include Altimet and SonaOne.
As of December 2016, Malique was planning to release a new solo album called TKO under his own label, Qarma Music. He also planned to release an English album in 2017.
