What's in a Name?
The name Toogong comes from an Aboriginal word. It means 'Dried up Lake'. This name likely describes the area's natural features long ago.
A Place of Firsts
Toogong is famous for being the starting point of Hazelton Airlines. This airline was created by two brothers, Jim and Max Hazelton, in 1953. Hazelton Airlines later became part of Rex Airlines, which is a well-known regional airline in Australia today.
St. Albans Anglican Church
One of the most important buildings in Toogong is St. Albans Anglican Church. It was built way back in 1872. This makes it the oldest church still standing in the nearby Canowindra district. The church is so special that it is listed by the National Trust of Australia. This means it is protected for its historical importance.
History of the Church
The Irvine family helped pay for the church to be built. They had moved to Australia from Northern Ireland. In 1863, they had already built an inn and a post office in Toogong. Besides being a place for worship, the church was also used as a school for children in the area.
War Memorial
In 1924, the two remaining Irvine brothers put up a war memorial in the church grounds. This memorial honors the brave men from the Toogong area who served in wars.
Toogong's School Days
Toogong had its own school from 1922 until 1967. It was in a special school building. Even though the school is not used anymore, the building is still there and has been kept safe.
Cobb & Co Stagecoach Stop
Long ago, Toogong was an important stop for the Cobb & Co stagecoach service. These stagecoaches were like old-fashioned buses. They carried people and mail between towns. The Cobb & Co route connected Orange to Forbes, and Toogong was a place where they would stop.
